A goal is something that you want to achieve. It is important to first set your goal and then take small steps to achieve it. Your goal must be clear and well-defined. Your goal must be SMART. There are certain things to keep in your mind before setting your SMART goal.

My AMAL goal

My Personal Goal: I will improve my English communication skills.

My Personal SMART goal: I will write down 250–300 words each day in English to improve the quality of my written English in my medium blogs by getting full marks by the end of the AMAL fellowship.

As my AMAL goal is to “Improve my communication skills”. In order to achieve this goal, I have set some short-term goals that I will try to achieve on weekly basis. I am an ambivert and sometimes I feel hesitate to communicate with other people. AMAL fellowship provides me with a platform to improve myself and become a better version of myself.

Here are the first three tasks that I will do on weekly basis in order to achieve my goal. In order to improve communication skills, It is important to have a grip on the subject you are communicating. For this reason, I have listed three small steps that I will take:

  1. Go through tenses and basic grammar rules:

The tenses are the most important part of English. If you want to write something in English or want to convey your message to someone then you need to know the tenses. I will try to write 250–300 words each day on different topics of my interest in order to improve the quality of written English. I also decided to then record these short blogs. In this way I can improve my speaking skills. Another way to improve speaking skills is talking to mirror. So this week, I just started going through tenses and then practice other things too.

2. Listen to podcasts:

Being a student of English, I try different ways to improve it. I always try to listen to videos especially podcasts that boosts my vocabulary, speaking and listening skills. I started listening to podcasts back in covid times, but left this hobby. Now I want to start it again, it not only improves speaking and listening skills but also gives knowledge. I started listening to “ 7 Good minutes with Clyde Lee Dennis” and also I have subscribed some of the podcasts channels:

  • Mindset Mentor
  • On purpose with Jay Shetty
  • Thought behind things
  • TED talks daily
  • Islamic history podcast
  • Habits of success

3. Read Newspaper:

Reading newspaper is a good habit that can enhance our knowledge, vocabulary, reading skills and a lot more. Reading newspaper helps to know about what is happening in the world. By reading newspaper, we can learn new words and can develop good vocabulary. Reading articles and then writing them in your own words is the best activity that can improve quality of written English.

After completing my first task, I am really excited to take small steps to achieve my SMART goals. I will try to read newspaper on weekly basis. Talking to mirror and recording your voicenotes are some of the ways that will improve my communication skills. I will try to contact my fellow fellows’ and practice English communication skills.

“ You don’t have to be good to start…. you just have to start to be good!”
